A Good Weekend with Kubb!
It’s good to get back to the basics. For me, that was visiting family in Vermont. I spent my Friday-night through Sunday-afternoon at my sister’s place hanging out with her and her husband. My brother and his family, who live about 20 minutes away, stopped by on Saturday and Sunday to have meals and hang out. It was a nice weekend for a visit and I think my presence might have provided a nice excuse for a distraction from chores. Of course, my brother is not so easily distracted and was mowing my sister’s lawn when I left (not because she’d asked him to or because of any obligation, simply because he felt like doing so). Of course, he and his family had also climbed Camel’s Hump (which is part of the incredible view from my sister’s house’s front deck) on Saturday morning and hit about 7 miles of trails Sunday morning (well before I’d woken up either day, I might mention). Did I mention that we played Kubb?
Saturday (late morning after breakfast and my brother-in-law had returned from some errands) we were trying to think of something fun to do. I’d witnessed the game of Kubb being played at Valhallapalooza the previous year and had wondered aloud about how cool it would be to have a Kubb set so we could give that game a try. After some quick research online, my brother-in-law headed down to his workshop and, in about 15 minutes with some recently acquired wood-stock and his table saw, had a Kubb set ready to go. We measured out a field and started playing. My brother and his family came by a little while after we started and their and their kids joined in the game. It’s an incredibly fun game that can be played on almost any mostly-level surface and, as indicated earlier, doesn’t require a lot of skill to make if you have the wood and the tools. You can buy sets online too, but the cost of online sets is completely insane considering how easy it is to make on. I could make a set, and I have no skills with power tools at all beyond basic wood shop class back in Junior High. We played again on Sunday and I got that rarest of things (for me): a sunburn. I’m rarely outside long enough to get one. We plan on bringing a Kubb set with us to our family gathering later this year on the beach…it will be a perfect game for the beach and accommodates all age levels, which is perfect for family gatherings.
All in all, a great weekend relaxing and playing with family. Can’t be beat. Oh, we watched “Pan’s Labryinth”, which was a great movie but a lot more violent than I expected (which was a bit rough for my sister who hates horror, violence and blood).
