Lies Pave the Path to Iraq War
As anyone who’s forced to interact with me for any length of time can attest to, I flip out when someone suggests that the reason we went to war with Iraq was to fight terrorism. I’ve ranted about it before, so I won’t reiterate my arguments here. Suffice it to say, those who would argue with me and spout the President’s BS about Iraq/Saddam Hussein assisting with the 9/11/2001 attacks on the U.S. or supporting the terrorists will have no leg to stand on after reading the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA Intelligence report done in 2005 (and just recently made public). In effect, every excuse that has been made by the Administration for dragging us into a war in Iraq has been stretched over the fire and toasted.
The saddest thing for me is that, way back when this all started and still in shock from the 9/11 attacks, I actually believed the Administration’s line of BS and supported the war. I actually trusted them to take the intelligence they were given and act in the best interests of our country. I actually believed them when they said that Iraq was supporting terrorists and could develop weapons of mass destruction to hand off to a group who had proved that they could attack us on our own soil. It didn’t take too long for me to realize that my faith was misplaced, but many others still believe the lies. Hopefully this will be a final straw that will break that camel’s back.
If you don’t want to read the whole report, just scan the conclusions or check out some news reports. Note that the Senate Intelligence Committee has traditionally been strong supporters of the Administration, so for them to come out with a report like this (that some of the members, the most ardent Bush supporters, didn’t want to make public because of how damning it is) speaks volumes. This is not some Democratic conspiracy, for those oh you who refuse to think in anything but party lines. Between this and the fact that some folks are finally standing up to the Administration and saying “no” to their attempts to rewrite the Geneva Conventions (a completely different story/argument that has many facets), it looks like Republicans realize their jobs are on the line. It’s very sad that it takes the threat of losing their place at the trough to get them to do their jobs properly.
Sadly, none of this is anything but further proof that Bush and his Administration lie and get Americans killed in wars that need never have been fought. It’s too late now and we have to sleep in the bed that we’ve made. Thousands of soldiers dead, more civilians, the degradation of the American reputation worldwide, and the blatant deception of the citizens…wow. It hurts just to think about it, which is why I guess so many people bury their heads in the sand. Peek out and see what monstrosity we’ve put into power…this beast is our responsibility (even for people like me who never voted for the prick) and it’s our job to make sure that we don’t let this abuse go unanswered. So get out and vote - get rid of the puppets who serve not the public, but their own wallets and sense of privilege. Exercise the power of the people as true patriots and lovers of this country must.
Wow…that war more “rah rah” than I usually get.
