Downing Street Memo
It’s not particularly shocking anymore, but there’s more evidence that the Bush administration lied to the American people about their reasons to start the war in Iraq. Again, I don’t care what you think about Bush or Democrats vs. Republicans mainly because I believe they are all corrupt leeches, but I do care about being deliberately lied to by our supposed leader. So when something like the Downing Street Memo comes out, it adds to my frustration and anger. Hopefully this document isn’t another Dan Rather/CBS unverified report, but so far no one has claimed that the memo is inauthentic.
Does anyone even remember the original justification for war with Iraq? Saddam Hussein continued to defy UN Resolutions and the US made the case for war based on their noncompliance. Then it was WMDs. Next came ties to terrorism. Finally it was in our nation’s interest to invade because only by regime change would we be kept safe. Meanwhile, people keep forgetting about the war and occupation of Afghanistan where the terrorists really were hiding. We pulled too many soldiers and resources out of Afghanistan to focus on this Iraq thing and now both theatres are unstable.
Never forget that all this political manipulation costs soldiers their lives. That is what I find truly egregious. We should never ask our soldiers to put themselves in harm’s way for anything less than true threats to the US. What bothers me is that many of the men and women who signed up for military service after 9/11 did so in order to take action against the terrorists who struck our country, but those in charge instead put many of those soldiers’ lives at risk in a war that had nothing to do with the fight against terrorism. That kind of manipulation disgusts me.
And to cut people off at the pass:
- Yes, I was offended when Clinton lied to the people. Clinton’s lies, however, didn’t cost soldier’s their lives
- I’m neither a Democrat nor a Republican; I register Independent for every election
- I’m a Patriot and anyone who claims that questioning one’s leaders is unpatriotic needs to re-read their history lessons and learn about how our wonderful country was founded
- No, I’m not in the military
- I support our troops and want them out of harm’s way as soon as possible
